Joseph and I allowed ourselves two days to get to Boulder, CO from Phoenix, AZ. We traveled about 7 hours a day, taking turns driving. This gave us the opportunity to see a little of Northern Arizona, a bit of New Mexico, and Southern Colorado. Our first stop was in Durango, CO., where we spent the night. Arthur had mentioned in the past that Colorado is the beginning of the West for him. I can see his point. Looking out of the car window one can image the covered wagons in pre-industry US rolling over the lazy plains, cowboys herding cattle over the hilly fields; and of course the rocky, jagged mountains where perhaps the legend of the West was really made: the place those bandits hid from the law after their most recent train robbery. I do not know if Colorado was the hiding place for outlaws however it is fun to imagine.
